Имеет статус штата с 1819 (22-й по счету штат). Большая часть территории расположена на Примексиканской низменности [Gulf Coastal Plain], на севере переходящей в холмистую равнину и отроги Аппалачских гор [ Appalachian Mountains]. Субтропический умеренно влажный климат. Важнейшие виды полезных ископаемых - уголь, нефть, природный газ. Штат на юге центральной части США, в группе штатов Юго-Западного Центра [ West South Central States]. Граничит со штатами Канзас [ Kansas] и Колорадо [ Colorado] на севере, Нью-Мексико [ New Mexico] на западе, с Техасом [ Texas] на западе и юге, с Миссури [ Missouri] и Арканзасом [ Arkansas] на востоке. Освоение региона началось после покупки Луизианы. Торговцы отправляли купленные здесь у индейцев товары в Новый Орлеан на плоскодонных баржах [ flatboat]. В 1808 племя осейдж [ Osage] уступило США всю восточную часть Оклахомы к северу от р. Арканзас, в 1818 индейцы куапо [ Quapaw] отказались в пользу США от земель к югу от этой реки (в нынешних Оклахоме и Арканзасе). Американское правительство стало заключать договоры с индейскими племенами, по которым планировалось всю территорию современной Оклахомы передать "Пяти цивилизованным племенам" [ Five Civilized Tribes]. В 1830 был принят Закон о переселении индейцев [ Indian Removal Act], и в 1830-40 около 100 тыс. индейцев были переселены в Индейскую Территорию [ Indian Territory], где каждому племени были постепенно выделены отдельные земли.
